About UsWhat is Learning through Leisure?Learning through Leisure is a service which offers family carers of people with a learning disability, the chance to take a break. Learning through Leisure can provide a break at the time of a carer's choice, whilst enabling the person they look after to enjoy regular and meaningful leisure activities. The service works by recruiting volunteers (known as Companions) to befriend people with a learning disability (known as Explorers). A Companion's role is to enable the Explorer to take part in activities of their choice, knowing that they have the support to do things they otherwise might not have had the confidence to do. This can be anything from an afternoon out to a short break and provides Explorers with an ideal opportunity to increase their independence, social skills and other skills. Their regular carer then gets a break whilst knowing the cared for person is safe, learning to be more independent and enjoying themselves too! Learning through Leisure also holds monthly Leisure Clubs across Suffolk which are a really good opportunity to come along and get to know everybody. The Leisure Clubs usually run on set times during the week and offer a wide range of activities such as bowling, cinema, eating out quiz night - the list is endless! Whilst they are arranged on set evenings,
they give valuable respite to family carers. Learning through Leisure has a small amount of funding that can be used to pay for Companion's costs whilst taking part in any activities. All Companions have enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks. in 2007 Learning through Leisure became part of the disability charity Optua and is run by Optua's Leisure Service.
